Antiques and Smalls
The Victorian Era produced thousands of interesting items that were both decorative and useful. "The Mechanical Age", the "Age of Invention", the new "working class", and women entering into the work force produced a new "class" of consumer during the second half of the 19th Century. There were gadgets and tools to ease mundane chores, costume jewelry imitating the genuine and machine-made, mass produced articles of silver and gold-filled metal. Much of this was made quite attractive by embossing, printing, engraving, appliqué and other techniques.

The Victorians adored decoration, they even decorated the decoration. The textiles of this period were also rich with color, texture, applied decoration, blended fibers and new machines made complex woven patterns possible. There was a new middle class, people who wanted to be entertained and have a social life outside of the home, they wanted to own things similar to their employers and landlords. The manufacturers produced inexpensive versions of items previously only available to the wealthy.

Many of these antique items are very sought after today. Among other things, we carry Vesta cases (match safes), snuff boxes, candlesticks, beaded and silver mesh purses, vanity items, figurines, boudoir lamps, Navajo hand weavings, Paisley Shawls, Piano Shawls, fine linens and a "what is it or two. On this Antique & Smalls Page, and in the Antiques Gallery it links to, we will offer interesting, decorative items, and, often still useful, treasures from ages past. Take a few minutes to browse through these galleries and let us know if there is something special you are looking for, we might have one.
